dbec: Part 0

dbec (Deter Business Email Compromise) is my project to develop a Firefox extension to help combat BEC.

On Episode 141 of Darknet Diaries, toward the end of the interview, host Jack Rhysider says:

“At a bare minimum, just show me a big, bright red banner on the e-mail that says, look out, this e-mail comes from a domain that was registered two days ago. That would be really cool.”

I thought, that sounds like a great idea for a project! I’m excited to start developing a Firefox extension that could have a real-world impact. Plus, it’ll be a good way for me to continue to learn JavaScript.

MVP

My MVP will focus on Firefox and Gmail. It will be a banner or a clickable icon that shows how long ago the email domain was registered. If the domain is less than a month old, a blatant warning will be displayed.

Later Versions

Long-term I want to make a version of dbec for Chrome and expand functionality to other major email providers.
